For years, Julia endured a contentious custody battle in Texas before a judge who didn’t understand domestic violence. Even with an order of protection, her abuser continued to threaten her and her children.
Desperate for help, Julia reached out to Sanctuary for Families. Our staff attorney walked her through her legal options, including the possibility of seeking safety outside Texas. But there were no guarantees — even if she fled to another state, the case could be sent right back under interstate custody law.
When her abuser showed up at her home with a shotgun, Julia made the most courageous decision of her life: she took her children and fled to Canada.
Sanctuary worked with her Canadian immigration attorney, preparing an affidavit explaining why U.S. law could not protect her. Thanks to that collaboration, Julia was granted asylum in Canada.
Once a nurse in Texas, Julia now plans to attend law school in Toronto to help other survivors find safety and justice.
